FAQ's
Do I have to be employed to be enrolled in a bakery apprenticeship?
Students must be working a minimum of 30 hours per week in a commercial or plant bakery to be eligible to enrol in an apprenticeship.
Can I enrol in an apprenticeship on a Student Visa?
We do not accept enrolments with Student Visas as they cannot meet the requirements for working hours required for an apprenticeship. Students must hold New Zealand Citizenship, Residency Visa, or Work Visa to be eligible to enrol in an apprenticeship.
How old do I need to be to enrol?
Students must be 16 years or older to enrol in an apprenticeship. Students under the age of 18 will need a parent or guardian to sign off their enrolment forms.
How much does the apprenticeship cost?
Please contact our administrative team at trainingschool@nzbakels.co.nz or on 09 579 6079 for information on the cost of training.
I think I might be eligible for Fees Free, what do I do?
If you think you might be eligible for Fees Free, please visit www.feesfree.govt.nz to check your eligibility.
I am eligible for Fees Free; how do I access the subsidy for my apprenticeship?
Once you have received a ‘Yes’ confirmation, please take a screenshot and include it with your enrolment application. We are unable to process your enrolment under Fees Free if you have not provided confirmation at the time of enrolment.
Are there any other subsidies available to help cover the cost of the apprenticeship?
The ‘Apprenticeship Boost’ subsidy is currently available through Work and Income through to December 2024. This is a subsidy that is paid directly to the employer to help cover costs related to the apprenticeship. Employers will need to apply for the subsidy after the student’s enrolment has been processed.
More information about the eligibility criteria and how to apply for the subsidy can be found at https://www.workandincome.govt.nz/employers/subsidies-training-and-other-help/apprenticeship-boost/
What is a Block Course? Do I have to attend one during my apprenticeship?
On top of completing on-job and theory assessments, all students are required to attend a week long Block Course once per year to have their skills assessed by one of our tutors.
Block Courses are held at our training facilities in Auckland, Palmerston North, and Christchurch. Students may be required to travel to attend their Block Course dependent on course availability in each location.
Please note that transport and accommodation to Block Courses are not covered by the course fees and must be paid for by the employer or student.
